Tour Guide / Deckhand

Seasonal: May – October

Compensation: $18/hr + gratuities

We’re growing our boat tour team and looking for people who enjoy being outside, engaging with others, and being part of a tight, high-energy crew.

What This Role Is

This is not just a deckhand position—it’s part host, part storyteller, part safety lead.

You’ll work alongside the captain to ensure a smooth and safe operation while also leading guests through an engaging, relaxed, and informative experience on the water. If you enjoy talking to people, being on the ocean, and creating a great atmosphere, this is a role where you’ll thrive.

What You’ll Do

  • Welcome guests onboard and lead safety briefings with confidence and clarity
  • Deliver engaging, conversational narration about Portland’s waterfront, lighthouses, islands, and local history
  • Serve beer, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages in a professional and friendly manner
  • Monitor guest safety and overall experience throughout the cruise
  • Assist with docking, line handling, and basic deck operations as directed by the captain
  • Help maintain a clean, organized, and inviting vessel before and after each trip
  • Create a fun, relaxed environment through storytelling and genuine interaction
  • Adjust your approach based on the group, weather, and flow of the tour

Who You Are

  • Outgoing, personable, and comfortable speaking to groups
  • A natural storyteller or someone who enjoys sharing information in a fun way
  • Calm, attentive, and committed to safety at all times
  • Reliable, punctual, and team-oriented
  • Comfortable working outdoors and on your feet for extended periods

Experience & Requirements

  • Previous hospitality, customer service, or boating experience is a plus
  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs and move comfortably around a vessel
  • Maine TIPS certification preferred (we can help you obtain it)
  • First Aid/CPR certification is a plus
  • Boating experience is helpful but not required—training provided

What a Great Day Looks Like

You help a full boat of guests feel welcome within minutes of boarding, deliver a tour that’s informative without feeling scripted, keep things running smoothly alongside the captain, and send people off saying, “That was one of the highlights of our trip.”

If you enjoy being on the water, working with good people, and creating experiences guests actually remember—this is a great fit.

Job Type: Temporary

Application Question(s):

  • What’s your favorite place to bring someone visiting Portland, and how would you describe it to them?
  • Imagine you have a full boat of guests and the energy feels quiet or disengaged—what would you do to shift the atmosphere?
